Learn about your time with Rough Creek Outfitters!
At Rough Creek Outfitters, our goal is to provide a personable hunt that focuses on the camaraderie that hunting is all about. While doing so, we work to fulfill our true passion of hunting. We focus on age and quality in all game we pursue. Ultimately the decision is yours of whether that game animal is one you choose to pursue, but we try to give you our best input as guides.
Our archery hunts are 5 1⁄2 days. We like to see clients show up early in the afternoon to check their gear and get sighted in. We’ll go through what to bring and things to expect, then off we go for an evening hunt. We’ll come back to a good home-cooked meal each evening. Mornings are a light breakfast so we can get to our hunting spots with plenty of time to set up. We’ll pack a lunch in the event we choose to stay out all day or find ourselves covered up in game, but always give the option to the hunter to return to camp if a break is needed as days in archery are very long. Evenings are set for a good meal, reflection on the day, and game plan for the following morning.
Rifle hunts are much the same, but are 5 day hunts as days have gotten shorter. We like to see hunters reach camp the afternoon before their hunt starts to sight in and check gear to make sure nothing has happened in travel. A range is provided for both archery and rifle hunters. If time allows, we’ll go on a short scouting trip the first evening hoping to get a head start for morning. As with both seasons, expect any kind of weather from rain and wind to snow and heat. In Montana it doesn’t take long to change!
Under the Big Sky, you can see for miles and glassing is a must for us, so we carry quality optics and range finders. Shots can vary in both archery and rifle but we will never ask you to shoot outside your comfort zone. It's our job to make sure you are comfortable and will work to improve any situation.
The Terrain
We hunt the Powder River bottoms filled with cottonwoods to big, rolling hills covered in sagebrush and timber, plus from rough breaks to lush hay meadows. In this terrain, it is not unlikely to see several species of game. There’s no telling; sometimes we find whitetail in the timber and elk on the river but we’ll hunt them wherever we need to. It makes for an experience like no other. I always tell hunters, “We’ll see what we see when we’re out there!”.
What to Bring
A basic equipment list of what to bring in each season will be sent out to each client. You’re welcome to bring your beverage of choice to enjoy in the evenings after a long day, if you choose to do so, but it is not provided.
Handling of Game
We will treat your trophy like it’s our own. We take pride in being able to take quality care of the meat and cape of your animal. We provide transportation of your meat to a local processor and will cape all animals as requested. We have several good taxidermy choices in the area and if a hunter would like to visit them we can assist in getting you and your trophy to them at no expense to you. Getting both your meat from the processor and your trophy home is the hunter's responsibility.
As guides, we want quality in every aspect of the hunt, but ultimately want you to leave with memories. That being said, if you've made it this far and like what you see, let us know if you’d like to come to Montana and spend a week with us, we’re happy to start the process of making a dream come true!
